Sci-Fi Childrens film Opening Sequence Analysis

object width="480" height="385">
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQrgMIhCkUk

I analyzed the conventions of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope opening sequence. The name of the company is shown in the opening credits. When the title of the film is shown, the theme tune is climatic and exciting, which sets the mood for the film and some writing has been used to introduce the narrative. There are two spaceships in the opening sequence as well as a number of lasers being fired at the smaller one, and a typical convention of a sci-fi children's film is that they get straight into a space battle. The location is established in the same part of the sequence as the part where the opening credits are seen, and the theme tune for 20th Century Fox productions starts off the opening sequence. A tilt shot is normally used in sci-fi children's films as a way of drawing our attention to the main location in which the action will take place. The space soldiers in this film all wear white helmets and black and grey suits, which is a typical convention of a sci-fi children's film. The opening scene contains very little dialogue, but since there are a lot of fast movements and is fast paced, there is no need for a lot of dialogue in the opening scene.

Fantasy Children's Opening Sequence Analysis

Screen shot 2010-11-26 at 15.35.10

We analyzed the conventions of Charlie And The Chocolate Factory opening sequence. The name of the company was shown on the credits. when the title of the film was shown "Charlie And The Chocolate Factory" it was drowned in chocolate which illustrates what the main point of the film was about.  throughout the opening sequence there was theme music playing which gave the sequence a magical feeling also the magical feeling was amplified by the machines working in an abnormally way. The opening sequence was slow paced to add mysteriousness to the opening sequence, also fog was used to add to the mysterious effect.  props were used to emphasis the magical and mysteriousness for example the "Golden Ticket" the name sounds very rewarding and helps with the magical effects. We knew that it was the opening sequence to a fantasy film because some of the machinery was working very fast and accurate which would not happen in a normal chocolate factory also when the chocolate was getting weighed down by the hot air balloons which also wouldn't happen in a average factory.

Toy Story 3 Opening Sequence Analysis

We watched the opening sequence to Toy Story 3 and analyzed the various conventions of it. in the first 29 seconds of the introduction, there is the Walt Disney film theme tune used to establish a light and cheerful mood, which is a typical convention used in Walt Disney children's films.
After 43 seconds into the opening sequence, the titles are introduced and the theme tune used here creates a climatic and exciting mood, which is a code that is commonly used in an action children's film.
The first location of the film is a desert, and this location has been established using a tracking shot, and the background music that is used here continues to maintain the climatic element of the opening sequence, but it establishes a darker mood, as opposed to the lighter and more cheerful mood established earlier on in the sequence.
The main characters in the opening sequence have been established in the following ways:-
MR POTATO HEAD: Establishing shot used to show him off as a villain, low angle shot used to show him as the less powerful character (the villain).
WOODY: High angle shot used to show him as the dominant character (the hero) which is code of an action children's film.
Mr Potato head is also wearing an eyepatch and is seen holding bags of money, which make it clear that he is the villain in this opening sequence as it is a stereotype in children's action films for the robber to be carrying bags of money.
Woody however, wears a brown hat, a cowboy shirt and blue jeans, which are clothes that a typical children's film western hero would wear.
When Woody and Mr Potato Head confront each other on the top of a train, which is seen as a convention of this particular film because it sets the scene and makes the events that take place more climatic and challenging for the hero, which builds excitement and tension and therefore is entertaining to children.

Pirates of the Caribbean Opening Sequence

Pirates-Of-The-Caribbean-The-Curse-Of-The-Black-Pearl-Original-Soundtrack

We watched the opening sequence to Pirate Of The Caribbean and analyzed the conventions of it. It started with a brief 15seconds where the title of the film faded up then faded out. during this time you also had a spooky, mysterious non diegetic sound playing in the background. These two together start the suspense, mysterious and creepy feeling to the film which is  created throughout. The font of the title looks as if it has been wrote with a quill, this is what pirates stereotypically wrote with so it shows what the film is about and sticks to the theme. The title has a black back ground with small bits of fire going around, this shows pirates to be dark, aggressive and dangerous, this keeps to the theme of the film and the mood they are trying to set.
at the start you see an establishing shot of the boat and the sea this illustrate the title sequence "pirates", in the establishing shot the boat is surrounded by mist which emphasize the oceans mysteriousness. There is a zoom in onto the ship and there is a girl singing which gives the scene kind of spooky effect, the camera moves closer to her creating tension when the man puts his hand on her shoulder the audience see it's a person of the crew. the girl is wearing an old fashioned dress, this is conventional of the time period it is set, it is also conventional of pirate clothes. The dress looks as if it has got dirty this could be due to life on deck and shows the stereotypical that pirates are dirty. when the man is finished telling the girl of about singing about the pirates he opening a flask of rum which is the stereotypical drink of a pirate.

In conclusion pirates of the caribbean conform to the opening sequence convention of a children's film by using background music, props to follow the theme, the mise-en-scene such as the fog which creates mysteriousness and adds an aery feeling to it. also the title conforms to the conventions because the style it written in matches the genre and what the film is about.

from producing this clip, we learned that to maintain continuity throughout the clip, we have to make sure that the characters are holding their props in exactly the same positions as the clip that came before it; as this makes the events that take place in the clip make sense. since we had one of the characters with a stick in one part of a clip but not the next, we had to change the way that the clip was structured through editing, so we were able to make the sequence make sense.
It is also important to make sure that your characters are standing or starting from the same positions as the clip before it; otherwise the characters look as though they have "randomly moved somewhere" and therefore the event in the clip makes no sense. Making sure that the shots we use, such as shots/reverse shots as well as an over the shoulder shot and establishing shots were included in the sequence was also an important element to the production of the film sequence.

Preliminary Task

we met the requirements of the task by using continuity, shot/reverse shot and the 180 degree rule. first of all we used continuity by coming in the same door as we started walking towards in the establishing shot. also kept the same costumes and props through-out the sequence. we also started at the same positions as we finished from. we used shot/reverse shot when the two characters are walking towards each other preparing for the battle. we obeyed to the 180 degree rule throughout the battle sequence. the two fighters stayed on the same side, and was filmed from the same side. also the 180 degree rule was met during the establishing shot when the character walks towards the door, it was filmed on the same side. also we used a reaction shot when one of the characters walk through the yellow door the shot changes to another characters reaction. we used a two shot when the two characters were talking before the battle, this was used because in order to get both characters posture and facial expressions in one shot.

how are the conventions construsted differently in Agent Cody Banks and Monster Inc.

In these two opening sequences there are many different conventions that have been constructed such as in monsters inc the opening music was happy and cheerful which shows it's comedy side, where as Agent Cody Banks had sinister music to portray its seriousness. both of the opening sequences start of with an establishing shot but in monsters inc is of the work and what they do in a humorous manner, where in Agent Cody Banks it has an establishing shot of the boy waking up on a normal day. in agent Cody banks there are some tilt shots and panning shots used to show the good interactions between the characters, showing that they are close, whereas in Monsters. Inc they use high angle and low angle shots to show the bad interactions between the characters, in the sense that the monster is scared of the "human child". The opening of monsters inc starts with the names of the company that made the film and the main title, it is short and just has the names of the company. people recognize the company for the company from their past work and will want to watch the film just from knowing it has been made by them. Agent Cody banks also beings with the name of the company it comes from but it is much briefer.
In Agent cody banks, a two shot has been used to give the audience an idea of the relationship between the characters, whereas in monsters inc there are a lot of mid-shots used, as there is only one character and the opening is constructed like this to show his reaction to his environment

Preliminary Task Storyboard.

DSCN0022
This our preliminary storyboard, it consists of:
An establishing shot at the start so you can get a feel for the location and atmosphere.
A close up shot of character opening the door to  show the position of power the character is in.
Match on action shot to show the action from another camera angle from the same point in time.
Reaction shot this encourages the audience to believe the characters are in the same geographical place and show the characters reaction.
long shot of both characters in the same location, this shows the audience of the characters position in comparison to location and one another.
Over the shoulder shot(s) to show the two characters having a conversation.
The 180 degree rule is used during the long shot of the two characters, we will pan round one side to establish continuity.
